The Art Deckle Ruler
True deckle edge paper has a soft, uncut, random deckled
edge that art professionals and fine stationery houses use
to add elegance and distinction.
Art Deckle is a high-quality stainless steel ruler with an
irregular wavy edge that lets you easily achieve a beautiful
deckled edge by dampening the edge of the paper, and tearing
the paper over the teeth of Art Deckle®.
With the Art Deckle, you control the placement, size and
shape of your deckled edge. You don't have to worry about
the natural grain of fine paper -- the Art Deckle will tear
uniformly on all four edges, highlighting the beauty of the
paper as well as your artwork.
You can get another beautiful and elegant look by using the
Art Deckle for blind embossing, too. After tearing the
deckled edge of the paper, turn the paper over, move the
ruler back 1/8" or so from the deckle, and emboss with the
fine end of an embossing stylus.
If you want a more feathery look from the tear, you can use
a small brass-bristled brush -- or a stiff toothbrush -- to "comb"
the fibers at the edge of the deckle.
Another wonderful use for the Art Deckle ruler -- as a
centering tool. This ruler has a zero center, with
measuring marks going out from the center on each side of
the zero. This makes centering items so easy!
Art Deckle 18" deckling ruler with zero center: was $39.00 now on
sale for $29.99
Sorry, this wonderful tool is sold out and, unfortunately,
discontinued.
Tips for beautiful deckled edges
Dry Edge Technique
1. Place your paper face-down on a flat surface.
2. Position Art Deckle 1/2" from the edge of your paper.
3. Using a forceful motion, tear your paper against the edge of Art
Deckle.Damp Edge Technique
For heavier papers, such as watercolor paper, first dampen the edge of
your paper with a natural sponge or a clean paintbrush dipped in water.
Deckle the edge using the same tearing technique described above.
|
Advantages of damp paper:
• Easier tearing
• Reveals more fibers • Creates a natural thinness at paper's
edge |
|
|
Tip:
To enhance this effect and control the degree of design depth,
use a brass brush to gently brush the fibers after deckling
paper edge. |

Random or Freeform Tear
Technique
1. Place your paper face-down on a flat surface.
2. Position Art Deckle about 1" from the edge of your paper.
3. Tear the paper in a back and forth motion, toward Art Deckle,
then away, allowing paper strip to hit the wavy edge of Art Deckle
intermittently.
Mulberry or Natural Paper Techniques
1. Place your paper on a flat surface.
2. Dampen 1/2" edge of paper, using a natural sponge.
3. Position Art Deckle 1/8" to 1/4" from edge of paper.
4. Using the point of a pair of scissors, pull the damp paper away
from Art Deckle, coaxing the long fibers to extend and allowing them
to remain attached to the paper. |
